Homemade Chalkboard: What's Old is New

I keep seeing ideas for DIY chalkboards all over the place.  One of my favorites is from the blog Little Baby Garvin.  Since I'm on summer break I decided to take on this project.  The idea is that I will be able to write on the life-size chalkboard when I'm pregnant.  I'll write things like what week I'm in, how big the baby is, and other random facts.  Then I'll stand beside it and have my husband take my picture.  I think this will be an easy way to display my growing belly and see the progress over time.  Now all I need to do is get pregnant!  :)
See below for a tutorial on how to make a chalkboard of your own.
Buy a large picture frame.  Make sure the frame itself is wood.  I found this one at Goodwill for $10.  There was no glass covering and the picture was mounted straight onto art board.  It was very stable, so I just painted right onto the picture.

I used spray paint for the chalkboard paint here.

Paint the wood whatever color you'd like.  Here you can see I used white.  I also included the paint brushes so you could see that I used the medium size of the three brushes.

This was the white paint I used on the frame.  As you can see, it was only $5.99 at Hobby Lobby.

This was the finished product.  When I tried to write on it, I realized that the spray paint was not durable and the chalk did not work well on it at all.  It would write in some areas and not in others.

I found this liquid paint at Home Depot for $10.  Don't waste your time buying the spray paint.  Go straight for this.

Here you can see how much better the liquid paint is compared to the spray paint.

The finished product!  I'm so happy with it!  I used Crayola sidewalk chalk that I found at Target for around $4.

I have been tossing back and forth the idea of a chalk board.... but I'm thinking I will just buy the fruit size, and maybe hold it to my belly? I don't know... just ideas! :)
good luck next month! I am super excited for you. I have kept secret when we will be 'trying' all I can say is that it will be some time this summer! :) it would be neat if we could be pregnant together!

  2. Thank you! I like the fruit idea in your pictures, that would be cute. Good luck this summer to you, too! I think it would be so cool if we were pregnant at the same time!
